3 November 2026 · Short · Watch on YouTube

Play the Short

WoW Forever's Early Name Reservation ran October 27 to November 3, and only players who pre-purchased a Skyborne pack or the Forever Collection got in. The cheapest pack is $29.99. Blizzard's own page says desired names still cannot be guaranteed. And every Forever character already gets dual names, which Blizzard pitched so nobody steals your first name. Everyone else names their character at launch, November 4 at 3 p.m. Pacific. An obituary, read by the deceased.

Obituaries — the deceased

There's a sticky note on my monitor that says Ashfall. An obituary for Early Name Reservation, born October twenty-seventh, late, because the servers fell over first1. It dies on November third at a week old, which beats most of my pugs2.

Obituaries — members only

Who got in? "Players who pre-purchase the Skyborne Heroic Pack, Skyborne Epic Pack, or limited-time Warcraft Forever Collection"2. The cheapest's twenty-nine ninety-nine3, and names still "cannot be guaranteed"6.

Obituaries — what it bought

Every character gets two names, so nobody steals your first one4. So they sold a head start on a name nobody could take.

Obituaries — survived by

It's survived by everyone who didn't pay, and they all type theirs on launch day at three, Pacific, me included, because I'm undead and good with leftovers5.

I'll be here. Forever.
